Oktoberfest 2009

Oktoberfest is a running fair of sixteen-day festival held each year in Munich, Germany since 18 October, 1810 (to celebrate Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Therese), an important part of Bavarian culture and is now the largest fair in Europe. This year, the celebration started on 19 Sept to 04 Oct.

In Oktoberfest, beer is a central point for the festival as is the traditional German food. Oktoberfest has a special beer they brew for the festival each year that is darker and stronger than other beers.

In Singapore, the Swiss Club organized an evening out to celebrate the ultimate event for fans of beer and group jollity on 02 Oct 2009. The event started at 7pm in a big tent and the menu was reassuringly Bavarian style - Wurstsalat (sliced Regensburger sausage), Leberknoedelsuppe (liver dumpling in clear soup), Wiener schnitzel (breaded veal schnitzel and steamed asparagus and potatoes), my favourite Schweinshaxe (grilled pork knuckle with sauerkraut and bread dumpling), pretzel, gingerbread and much more which I wish I can have a taste of all dishes but unfortunately, my stomach was too full. A simple rule of Oktoberfest - "eat properly before starting to drink the bear" and the live bands started playing with their oomph-pa-pa music after couple of hours dinner section. Many guests were inspired to dance and some even stand up and dance on the table.

Some guests (not sure whether they are Bavarian) were wearing the traditional oktoberfest custumes. Men will wear lederhosen which are short pants with suspenders and knee socks with clogs or other traditional shoes. For women will wear the dirndl, a dress with a close-fitting bodice and full skirt gathered at the waist, usually about knee-length. It looks beautiful and captivating, hmmm ... ... maybe will try the dirndl on next year (if there's a chance).

It just felt like Oktoberfest in Munich with the food, the beer and the toasting “Oans, zwoa, drei, gsuffa” which means “one, two, three, toast and drink” and everyone’s spirits were lifted higher.

What a great atmosphere and a enjoyable night. Thank goodness that my colleagues and I were invited by RZB Singapore to this event for the first time and a great teambonding we have.
